| SAN ANTONIO - Boasting 27 teams, this year's
San Antonio Relay for Life generated at least $69,000 for the American Cancer Society. The relay, part of a nationwide program that benefits the cancer society, took place April 12-13 at San Antonio City Park. According to Patti Richter, the relay drew participants from San Antonio, St. Leo, Wesley Chapel, Darby, St. Joe, Dade City, and Tampa Bay Golf and Country Club. "We came together for one day but relay all year long," said Richter, who led the San Antonio Relay with co-chairwoman Terri Gude. "We will never give up the fight." As a 15-year cancer survivor, Richter was pleased to see nearly 400
people in attendance. "They fought the battle and won," she said. Robert Linville received the relay's Caregiver Award, for his support of his wife, Colleen, during her triumphant battle with cancer. Other event highlights included a performance by Darby natives The Bellamy Brothers, and a Wall of Hope display. In addition, participants enjoyed a Crazy Hat contest, and decorated their campsites according to the event's Cruisin' for a Cure theme. The relay's younger guests had their own activities, and, according to Richter, lent an extra dose of spirit and fun to the proceedings. "The relay is about them," Richter said. "They're the future. "Richter said the honorary chairman was the unborn child of participants Mark and Theresa Anderson. "We always give the honorary chairperson position to an unborn child, because the future of this relay is in the hands of young people," she said. "We won't give up until we can ensure that no one has to hear, 'I'm sorry. You have cancer.'" For information about the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, visit www.cancer .org
